Ludwig the II acquired the Herreninsel in 1873 and immediately began construction on his homage to Louis XIV of France. This palace was his own, mini replica of Versailles built on an island tucked away on Lake Chiemsee. Sadly, as was true of the majority of Ludwig’s architectural dreamscapes, this castle was never completed. In spite of its unfinished construction, the gardens and interior are breathtaking, granting visitors a rare glimpse into the imagination of Bavaria’s favorite monarch.
